Brickwork in Manchester

Brickwork · Manchester (M-postcodes)

Specialist brickwork for Manchester homeowners

Specialist brickwork across Manchester — repointing, brick matching, chimney repairs, bay rebuilds and new garden walls. We work on Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Chorlton, Didsbury, Whalley Range, Levenshulme and the rest of the M-postcodes, where original Accrington reds and lime mortar still dictate how the work needs to be done.

Most Manchester repointing failures happen because someone used modern cement mortar on a solid-wall Victorian terrace. Cement is harder than the original brick, so frost damage transfers into the brick face instead of the joint — and you lose the front elevation. We mix lime mortar on site to the original ratio and match the joint profile to what the bricklayer in 1895 actually did.

FAQs

Brickwork in Manchester — questions answered

Why does my Victorian brickwork keep cracking after repointing?+

Almost certainly cement mortar on a solid-wall Victorian terrace. Modern cement is harder than soft Victorian brick, so frost forces the brick face to spall instead of the joint. The fix is to rake out and repoint in lime mortar — slower, but it lasts decades and saves the original brick.

How do you match old Manchester brick?+

Sample bricks come out first, we identify the type (usually Accrington red, common stock, or buff) and source matched reclaim from yards across the M-postcodes. For elevations not visible from the street we'll use new brick tied in carefully.

Do you handle chimney work?+

Yes — rebuilds from roof level up, repointing, lead flashings and pot re-setting. We always scaffold properly; ladder work on chimneys is how people get hurt.

How long does a front elevation repoint take?+

A typical Manchester terrace front: 2–3 weeks including scaffold up, raking out, repointing in lime and scaffold down. Wet weather pauses lime work but doesn't damage it once set.

Testimonials

What our
Customers say

Don't just take our word for it. Hear directly from the homeowners and businesses who've trusted us with their projects.

"Lee was doing some work that looked great for my neighbour and so I asked him to come and do some pointing and drain repairs for me. I was really happy with the workmanship, the price and the punctuality. Lee was not quite happy with the match of colour of some bricks he was going to use around my drain — he went off to get a better match! Great work overall."

"We used Boardman Builders to repurpose our old garage — they reduced the length to give us a bigger drive, got rid of the up and over door and bricked up the space, installed a new roof, entrance door and electrics. I love my new shed! Very happy with all the quality of work."
